It’s true: “Happy days are here again”
If you live in Fayette County, the Lexington-Bluegrass Association of Realtors says the odds are 6 or 7 in 10 that you are jump-up-and-down happy about the job Mayor Jim Newberry and the Urban County Council are doing.
The Realtors, who have tracked local public opinion since 2002, say they have never seen approval percentages as high as this year.
Asked if the city is headed in the right direction, 63.1 percent of those polled said it is. This “contrasts starkly” with 2005 when only 28.4 percent answered yes, Realtors say.
Asked if they had a favorable or unfavorable impression of the mayor, 72.9 percent said “favorable.” Only 2.8 percent said they didn’t know who he is.
Asked if they approve of the recent decisions of the Urban County Council, a record 60.9 percent said they did. This compares with the record low of 30.1 percent in 2005.
Fayette County residents are clearly happy, at least for the moment, with their government.
We should bottle some of that good feeling.
Politics is involved so it’s bound to change.
