When fists fly, it’s time to leave

Mayor Jim Newberry wants us to be more like friendly, helpful London cab drivers and less like surly New York cabbies when foreign visitors begin arriving for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in 2010.

“I’m still trying to get over … my first impression of New York” from a cab ride more than 20 years ago,” the mayor told the Bluegrass Hospitality Association on Thursday.

Hyatt Regency General Manager Larry Bell told the group that his New York experience was even worse than Newberry’s.

“My cabbie and another cabbie were cutting each other off (in traffic) and yelling at each other,” Bell said. “We came to a stoplight and my cabbie jumped out and got into a fistfight with the other cabbie. I got out and left.”

So how much should you tip after such a New York minute?

“I left enough to cover the meter,” Bell said. “I did not leave a tip.”
