And God said, “Pay your bills!”
The invocation brought a few titters at the Lexington chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners’ annual awards luncheon Thursday.
After NAWBO member Janey Moores asked the Lord to bless the women’s companies with a flood of business, she went on to ask for a little help with bill collections, too.
“We pray that you compel these people who owe us to just pick up their pen and write their checks today,” she prayed.
Later, Winner’s Circle Award honoree Anita Madden brought a bit of festivity to the event.
Her husband and son, Preston and Patrick Madden, had provided bottles of champagne for every table.
She quoted the late Kentucky politician Alben William Barkley, who once said that “the best audience is intelligent, well-educated and a little drunk.”
“Please drink up,” she said, “because you have already fulfilled the other two requirements.”
Madden said one of her greatest fears is being boring, so she had brought along photos — including some from her past Derby eve parties — which were projected onto large screens.
There also were family photos, including one of her son Patrick as a young boy.
“Obviously, I did a great job of sire selection,” she said.
