Rolling the barrel is easy; selling the whiskey is hard
It turns out that selling whiskey is trickier than you might think.
At the opening ceremony for Alltech’s malt whiskey distillery on Thursday, Alltech President Pearse Lyons announced that barrels of his new malt whiskey, Pearse Lyons Reserve, will be sold as they are produced and the buyer can monitor the aging of their whiskey by logging onto the Internet.
The first batch is expected to be ready in time for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in 2010.
On Friday, the company got “a few calls, asking ‘How do we do this?” said spokesman Billy Frey.
After further discussions involving Alltech’s lawyers, the company realized there were some details that hadn’t been worked out. For example, can Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. sell the whiskey directly to consumers or must it go through a licensed dealer for tax purposes?
“They are working out the logistics and they should have an answer in a week or two,” Frey says.
So be patient, whiskey-drinkers. Sales information, including prices, will be announced by Alltech as soon as it is available.
