Irish tenor Ronan Tynan, known for singing “God Bless America” at Yankee Stadium, thrilled guests at Ashford Stud outside Versailles during a party Saturday.

The Ryder Cup-related visit of Irish tourism minister Martin Cullen prompted the festivities, reports Herald-Leader Editor Linda Austin.

More than 100 guests dined under the stars at the Coolmore-owned horse farm on Irish smoked salmon, corned beef, farmhouse cheese, brown bread and Bailey’s Irish cheesecake.

Tynan’s powerful rendition of “Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears” left the audience hoping for an encore.

Instead, fresh from Valhalla Golf Club, former Gov. Ernie Fletcher and Alltech President Pearse Lyons, who was born in Dublin, tried to lead the audience in “My Old Kentucky Home.”

Like many Kentuckians, however, they found the words in the middle of the tune escaping them.

First, they recruited former first lady Glenna Fletcher to help them out, but it wasn’t until Everett McCorvey, the dapper-in-his-tuxedo director of UK Opera Theatre, joined them that the state anthem got back on track.
